CHAPTER THIRTY

JAY GOT UP from his bed and put on some jeans and a shirt. He didn’t care if they were clean or not, he hadn’t been sleeping well. Even his job told him to take some time off. They were probably worried he was going to bring down the morale or mess something up. Didn’t matter to him, he wasn’t even putting in the effort that he should.

He went to the kitchen and got some ham and cheese from the fridge. He forgot when he went to the grocery store, usually his son was the one to nag him when he should be going. When he bit into a piece of cheese it had a bitter taste to it and even smelled like it had been inside the fridge for months.

He looked through his phone and didn’t see any calls or messages from people. Just another day for him to pass, to see if Leo would even bother to come back home. He worried and wanted to make sure that he was okay but not being able to contact him was the worst.

He sat down and turned on the television. He didn’t like the quiet, which made him feel like no one lived in the whole, and didn’t want to get jumped scared by any noise. It wasn't the same being in the house by himself. All he could do was worry and he wanted to stop it. He stomped his foot on the floor and banged his hand on the table.

Suddenly his phone rang, he picked it up without looking at who was calling. “Hello.” It was the police department. Finally, he could maybe get some good news that would put his mind at ease. But with the passing of time, his heart sank to the floor.

They had found Leo…and they had found his girlfriend and the two of them were both dead. Someone or something got to them, but they found them in some street and it took Jay everything he had to not break down on the phone.

But he was weak dammit. Weak that his only son was gone, everything that he was gone with nothing but memories to help fill the void.

He let the officer on the other line go. They wanted him to wait to see the body. They wanted to make sure Jay didn’t see him in a horrible state.

Jay wanted to ask more questions and yell them into a towel. That it should have been him, that Leo had such a bright future. His son had so much life to live and it was taken from him, some monster that wanted to hurt others.

He threw his phone across the room and fell to the floor. Feeling that life didn’t matter anymore and that there was no point in going on because Leo was killed, just taken without a notice. His last thoughts were what ran through Jay’s mind over and over again. Thinking that he hoped his son wasn’t afraid, that he put up a fight but he needed to see Leo.
